Welcome to Le Club d'Art Nouveau!

Wed Jan 30, 2008, 11:55 PM
EDIT:Several updates have been made to this journal, it bears rereading from start to finish!

Bienvenue! (Welcome!)

Qu'est-ce que l'Art Nouveau? (What is Art Nouveau?)

“The decorative repertory of Art Nouveau was derived principally from the observation and imitation of nature, in particular of exotic flowers and plants. The origin of the name is usually attributed to S. Bing, who in December 1895 opened a gallery in Paris that he called L’Art Nouveau.”

Michèle Lavallée: "Art Nouveau: Introduction" Grove Art Online. Oxford University Press, 01/20/08, [link]

Notre club (Our club)

Art Nouveau is all about the “creation of beauty in utility.” That is to say, functional, beautiful art; a person could have an Art Nouveau home filled with Art Nouveau furniture and utensils, as well as Art Nouveau…art, lol. While we appreciate the modernization of art, this club is dedicated to the original conventions of the style. As such, we will be a bit more selective about the devs we choose to display than other Art Nouveau clubs might be. This is not intended as a slight against artists or their art which we may decline to display, it is simply an effort to display only pieces which reflect the original characteristics of the movement. More modern Art Nouveau is more likely to be welcomed to :iconart-nouveau-club: , a lovely club of longer standing that welcomes original and modern Art Nouveau styles alike, or :iconartnouveau: , a club of even longer standing. Currently, we are posting every piece of Art Nouveau work that fits our criteria by whomever joins in our gallery, featuring them and placing them in appropriate folders. If you don't agree with the folder we have your work in, Note us, we'll move it. Once we have more than ten members, we'll begin to compartmentalize even more, featuring only one dev from each member, placing all the rest of their Art Nouveau submissions in the folders. When that time comes, members will receive a Note asking them to chose among their devs which they would prefer we feature in the main gallery.

That said; please see the How to Join section for information on how you can join this club. Please note the club, do not reply in the comments of this journal with requests to join. For any questions you may have, please FAQ section of our club for information on the styles we seek to display and other club policies. If the FAQ doesn't cover your question, you may submit it to the comment area below it. Our Submissions area will give you the guidelines to follow for submitting a link to your work to the club once you have been accepted as a member. Don't forget to visit the club's creator (and her stock account, if you’re looking for subject matter!) and let her know where you found her, she’ll leave a comment on your frontpage!

Nos Amis (Our Friends)

We are not currently affiliated with any dA clubs, but will seek to do so soon. Please look for updates, and add their icon to your journal if you are a member. If you are an affiliated club, please feel free to put our stamp and icon in your journal. Here is a list of those kind enough to watch the club (members and honorable club promoter excluded, since they are listed in the Members area):

Une dernière chose (One Last Thing)

The first member to donate a year’s subscription to the club will get a personalized stamp, the first month’s feature in our Monthly Member Spotlight, and his or her choice of one of `blackeri 's Seven Deadly Sin postcards, in matte or glossy finish (just to show you we really do appreciate modern Art Nouveau too!) If the first person is someone who is not a club member wishes to donate a subscription, he or she will have each of the above thank you gifts and a month long feature in the club creator’s Now For Something New journal feature in lieu of the club journal.

(Many thanks to =philho for helping me with my rusty French! Now you know why I don't use it in every journal. :flirty: Ah well, "c'est la guerre... la guerre!")

Interesting, although I fail to see the difference with ~artnouveau (apparently dead without making much) and ~art-nouveau-club (seems more active).

Would you mind if I correct your French? Overall good, but some strange expressions, like those I write in English! =)
"Quel est l'Art nouveau ?" => "Qu'est-ce que l'Art Nouveau ?"
"Les membres, vieux et nouveaux" => "Les membres, anciens et nouveaux"
"Une chose dernière" => "Une dernière chose"
"Laissez les bon temps roulez!" => "Laissez les bons temps rouler !"
The latest is a correction on grammar, but doesn't mean much. I know it is a literal translation of Bob Dylan's song title...

Oh, and use :dev mark for blackeri, it would avoid typos sending to devianart... =)

I wish you success with your club!

No to signature clichés! You are on an art site, be creative!
If you check the FAQ section, you will see the difference, but I will paste it here for you, so that you may have your answer quickly:

"Q: What makes your club different from the other dA Art Nouveau clubs?

A: We are a bit more selective about the work we choose to display. This club is looking for a particular part of the Art Nouveau movement, one that not everyone is interested in using when creating their art. We’re also the newest AN club, so we’re going to have different ways of doing things than our longer standing counterparts. Finally, the club creator is a French/Mexican/Irish woman born in the US, whereas art-nouveau-club is run by a member who comes from Poland, and artnouveau is a run member who lives in France. Remember, different isn’t better! We just like to offer an alternative for those who prefer to stick to the original style, and wish to see work by others of a like mind in one convenient place. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but we do hope you’ll enjoy what you see here."

As for the French, it looks like you're not as rusty as I, lol. I learned French from an American native French speaker, and it's a bit different than what is probably more proper. You got me on the first one, I asked "Which is Art Nouveau" by mistake, how silly of me! Vieux is another word for old, anciens is ancient, so I think I prefer vieux, lol. "chose derniere" is a slip, lol. In Spanish, we put the noun before the adjective, and unfortunately, the more Spanish I learn, the less French I remember. And you're right about rouler, lol, I simply forgot the quotes. I was indeed quoting the song title. Thanks for your help.

I'm not up on all the ins and outs of dA, what do you mean by :dev mark? I know, probably a dumb question, lol. I usually use the <a href or :icon when linking to deviants, so do you mean putting :dev in front of the name? Will do, thanks for the tip! And thank you for the well wishes, we'll see if we get any members!

Well, I am French, so indeed I am not rusty on the language... The corrections I gave reflect usage (vieux/ancien -- vieux is toward age of person, ancien is toward oldness of membership, but either are understandable, of course), but obviously they are just advices.

And yes, you can write :devdartnouveau: to have ~dArtNouveau like you can write :icondartnouveau: to have :icondartnouveau: - convenient, fast to type and accurante (as long as there is no typo, Preview is useful here) way of linking deviants.

I am still not too sure about the "to stick to the original style", but I suppose you mean works close of Mucha's or Gallé's, rather than variations taking to the style but also to other styles.
For example, I bet that my Visiting - or calling - card or my Jealousy pieces won't fit, as they are also close of anime/manga style. Right? I also have a couple of art nouveau works in my favourites.

Well, if "different isn’t better", having choice is good, anyway! =)

The club creator (me, as it were, lol) is French by birth, American by nationality, lol. I see the distinction more clearly now, and bow once more to your superior command of the language.

Thank you for clarifying the :dev mark, I tried it on a gamble I'd understood correctly, and have been using it since, lol. You also understand correctly about what we want as far as style goes. We aren't looking for copies of work by Mucha, Gallé or other greats (though tributes are certainly welcome!), but work done in those styles, as opposed to more modern takes on Art Nouveau. Visit ~mohamed-ufo's Art Nouveau pieces for some examples of what we seek. Mind you, we don't expect everyone to be masters of the style, but we do hope that the basic concepts will be adhered to.

The reason we wish to leave the membership qualification issues to Notes is to avoid singling anyone's work out as "unsuitable" for our gallery in public view, I'm sure you understand. Since you ask specifically here, though, no, neither of the devs you listed are quite what we're looking for, though the Art Nouveau elements in them are quite lovely. That isn't to say that if in the future you created something in the original style you wouldn't be welcome to seek membership. And as we state in the news article recently submitted, we do fave the work of non-members as well, regardless of whether or not they adhere to the original Art Nouveau style.

I agree, choice is good! This is part of the reason I created the club, to give our fellow deviants an interesting alternative in Art Nouveau clubs.
